There is actually a very succinct and useful list to explain this: To acquire knowledge. To learn how to access multiple resources, how to select the most valuable information, and how to credit those resources. To write effectively in a formal, academic manner. To enhance critical thinking skills such as analysis, synthesis, and organization To weave information together in a meaningful and powerful way. A research paper should consist primarily of your own writing (based upon research) and should not be a long series of quotations from other writers. You do want to quote sources, especially when there is no other way to say something, or when you think the writing is particularly powerful or eloquent. However, you have to blend direct quotes into the fabric of a paper that is primarily your writing, based upon the research you have done. ...
